The federal ministry of economics and technology (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi)) launched the funding competition „model projects for broadband development“ in the autumn of 2010. Through the funding of competition development of high performance networks (broadband of at least 50Mbit/s) it was to be made possible in areas in which the economic feasibility is difficult.
The atene KOM accompanied the decision process by the jury. In spring 2010, 25 winner regions from all over Germany started their work.
The former federal minister of economics and technology Rainer Brüderle stated: „High performance broadband networks are an important factor when deciding on location and secure growth and occupation. The competition in agglomeration areas will secure development of such networks. For the provision in rural areas it is necessary to make use of all cost lowering options. We want to point out the solution examples with the help of the model projects.”
The broadband strategy of the federal state is enhanced by the competition. Goal of the broadband strategy is to make networks with a bandwidth of at least 50Mbit/s available to 75% of the households by 2014.
The call to competition as well as further information can be found on the website of the federal ministry of economics (BMWi) or the broadband portal "zukunft-breitband.de".
One of the major infrastructural issues in the last, and also in the coming years, is the broadband expansion in Germany. Since December 2010, atene KOM, together with the federal broadband office (BBB), assumes an important role in respect to communication and information on this topic.
The BBB was launched as a centre of competence by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) to support the development of broadband connection.
The Federal broadband office is the contact authority for all interested municipalities, companies and citizens. Information is collected, analyzed and shared and strategies are developed here. More information on broadband expansion in Germany can be found on the portal of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, or directly on information website: the future of broadband.
